What is the thorasic spine?
The thorasic spine is located in the chest area, and it contains 12 vertebrae (which are bones). The thorasic levels are numbered thoracic levels are T1, T2, and T3 through to T12.
Examples of Injuries which can occur to the thorasic spine:
Vertebral Fractures
Hyperflexion Injury
Flexion with Compression
Vertical Compression Fracture (when the vertebrae collapses)
Hyperextension
Burst Fracture
Chance Fracture
Fracture Dislocation
Herniated thoracic disk
Compression fractures of the spine most commonly occur at the bottom part of the thorasic spine, that is, at the T11 and T12 levels, and the first vertebra of the lumbar spine- the L1.
Symptoms of thorasic spinal injury include thorasic back pain and neurologic dysfunction. If there is spinal cord compression, then bowel and bladder dysfunction can occur.
Diagnosis of the nature of the condition is usually made through radiology such as X-ray, MRI, myelogram, CT scan or bone scan and neurologic clinical examination.
Treatment for thorasic injury
For the acute phase of a thorasic disc injury, the focus of physical therapy is to decrease the patient's symptoms with cold/heat therapy, ultrasound, and rest. Pain killing medications (such as anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen) can help minimize pain and inflammation. Narcotic analgesics are strong medications prescribed for short term pain control. Corticosteriods may be used to relieve inflammation of nerve roots and surrounding tissues.
With severe traumatic spinal injuries, spinal surgery may be needed. The type of surgery needed will depend upon the medical condition that you have. Examples of surgical procedures of the thoracic spine include: Vertebrectomy, Posterior Thoracic Fusion, Anterior Thoracic Surgery, Kyphoplasty, Laminectomy, Foranimotomy, Thoracic Fusion, Corpectomy, Endoscopic Discetomy, Posterior Discetomy, Endoscopic Sympathectomy. Surgery always carries with it its own risks which your treating physician surgeon will advise you about.
Traumatic Thorasic Back Injuries
Thorasic back injuries are common in motor vehicle accidents and industrial accidents, where there is blunt trauma or penetrating trauma. It is estimated that thoracic injuries occur in 12 of 1 million Americans every day and are directly attributable to 20% to 25% of all traumatic deaths (this is approximately 16,000 deaths per year in the U.S alone). Some studies have indicated that thoracic fracture dislocation leads to an 80% rate of paraplegia.
Thorasic spinal trauma can have lifelong effects, and therefore accurate diagnosis and prompt hospitalization and treatment is needed. One medical study has shown that early stabilization of thoracic spine injuries, usually within 3 days of trauma is needed to ensure a favorable outcome for the patient.
If you have been injured as a result of an accident or if you have received poor medical or surgical treatment, then you may be entitled to get compensation.
